Teaching And Learning Sustainability

This issue of The SKETCH_PAD© marks the first anniversary of distributing our company's monthly newsletter.  While it's been quite a commitment, the benefits both Jeff and I have received from the effort have been more than worthwhile.  People are constantly commenting on how much they enjoy the colorful graphics, interesting news items, and thought provoking content.  The feedback has been very gratifying.

Environmental concerns seem to be on the minds of most everyone these days.  And with good reason–– so many of us are sensing that unless we're willing to reconsider our current patterns of consumption and growth, that we're headed for potentially serious social, environmental, and economic consequences. The concept of "sustainability," to which both our company and this newsletter are devoted, is increasingly seen as the solution to this growing crisis.

The SKETCH_PAD© is intended to offer alternatives, stimulate discussion, and illustrate what can be done.  I've learned so much simply by producing it each month.  The previously fringe movements of sustainability and green building have now become mainstream and are growing exponentially.  New products, materials, and technologies, as well as inspiring and innovative examples of their use are being developed daily.

As architects, and 'designers' of our built environment, we have been entrusted with helping to shape the direction, character, and quality of our buildings and our cities.  I feel a personal responsibility for continued learning, sharing, and speaking out in an effort to help create the sustainable relationships between our natural and built environments which I believe are possible.

The decisions we make this coming year really can have a positive effect on the world that our children, and our children's children, will inherit.  Together,  let's step up to the plate.

Happy New Year!
