Dear
Clients & Colleagues:
Our
Native American Brethren
This weekend, I saw Al Gore’s movie, “An
Inconvenient Truth”. Four evenings of the film were
generously hosted by North Central University. Every seat
in the theater was taken.
I was disappointed.
I left the theater scratching my head. How could an issue of such
obvious importance not be on the tongues of every American? How
could a film so convincing and so clear, not be
taking the country by storm? How could the topic of global
warming-- an issue that will ultimately effect every human being, in
every country on the planet-- not be elbowing other topics out of the
headlines? Much like the proverbial frog that doesn't notice the
water temperature as it gradually heats up to the boiling point, our
own dire situation is mostly unnoticed by us.

It
is difficult to get a man to understand something
when his salary depends upon his NOT understanding it.
--Upton Sinclair |
Our Native American brethren, who are the focus of this newsletter,
have a tradition of passing stories from generation to
generation. This oral custom is a vital and timeless link to
the past. Their stories include tales of fish being so
plentiful that a grown man could walk across the waters by stepping on
their backs. Today these tales seem fanciful and unreal; yet,
these same stories were echoed in the writings of our own early
American settlers.
What
Will Our Legacy Be?
What stories will we tell our
grandchildren? That we went zero to sixty in five seconds?
That we shared a 12,000 square foot house with only one other
person? Do we believe our grandchildren will look upon our
generation with reverence and respect? Or will they be scratching
their heads in "shock and awe", wondering how we could not
have noticed the temperature as it rose to the boiling point.
Each of us can do our part to reverse the trend of global
warming. As an architect, I plan to design and build my own home
which will be completely energy independent, and can hopefully be seen
as a model for others to follow. To see what you can do to take
action, go to www.climatecrisis.com.
