Dear
Clients & Colleagues:
Gasoline
Blasphemy
If you are easily offended, or have a weak
stomach, you might want to put your hands over your eyes for the
rest of this message. I am about to make a blasphemous
statement.
Gasoline does not cost enough. That’s right. Three
dollars per gallon is not even close the price that we should be
paying. Five is more like it. Why? Because this
is a dwindling fossil fuel with an increasing demand? Yes,
but that is not why I am actually applauding higher prices.
Because increased prices at the pumps will encourage alternative
fuel research? Certainly, but that reason misses the mark,
also.
When it costs fifty, sixty, seventy dollars or more to fill up our
gas tanks, it will be a hardship that we will all feel. Even
if it makes it more likely that we will spend money on research
rather than weapons, it will still mean higher costs of living for
us all. And that is when we will all begin to collectively
examine our lifestyles. We will start walking to work again,
riding our bikes, car pooling and taking the bus. Better yet,
new urban areas will be designed to accommodate people, rather than
cars.
Look at a map of Arizona. Now, draw a line from Black Canyon
City to Kingman. Draw another from Wickenburg to
Flagstaff. “X” marks the spot where Prescott sits
on the verge of exponential growth, with half a million people in
our future. Cheaper fuel is not the answer. Neither are
wider roads. Fewer cars, less driving, more mass transit...
more common sense, these are the real reasons that I laud the
higher gas prices.
You may take your hands off of your eyes now.
