CATALYST'S
Project Aware Celebrates Grand Opening
![]() PRESCOTT, AZ- "Energy efficiency is essential in affordable housing," CATALYST principal Jeff Zucker said in his recent address at the Project Aware Men's Shelter Dedication Ceremony on April 24. He concluded, "Otherwise, you are just creating cheap housing with high operating costs in the form of high utility bills-- passing the buck to the occupant." Zucker went on to emphasize the improved personal effectiveness and health of individuals living in energy-efficient, reduced toxicity affordable housing, versus the lost efficiency and increased absenteeism promoted by less desirable living situations. Designed by Zucker of CATALYST ARCHITECTURE, the Project Aware Shelter includes Phase I, which consists of 4 one-bedroom apartments; and Phase II with its 10 studio efficiency apartments that promote a 'less is more' design ethic. The Shelter site did not offer an opportunity for the unobstructed south light needed for passive solar heating. "But," said Zucker, "Prescott is really a swing climate, where we have as many heating degree days as we have days when we need supplemental cooling." As a result, through shading and insulation, Zucker designed the structure to stay naturally cool, thereby cutting the utility requirements in half. The building was also wired for the future use of Photovoltaic panels. Links: Project Aware Phase I Grand Opening Pictures Project Aware Phase I Grand Opening Press Release Jeffrey
