CATALYST Pens Contract For 5,000 sq.ft.
Off-Grid
Gathering Hall And Art Gallery In Yavapai County
PRESCOTT,
AZ- CATALYST ARCHITECTURE has recently signed
new contracts for Design Guidelines, and Professional Design Services
for a 4,500 sq. ft. Gathering Hall and an 800 sq. ft. Art Gallery for a
community in Northern Arizona. The Community's intention
for an aggressively energy and resource-efficient community led them to
CATALYST. Construction technologies currently being
considered for the walls include straw bale and earth bag
construction. Either one of these methods could be erected by the
community members in a modern day version of a barn raising. The
buildings are anticipated to be completely off-grid, with photovoltaic
panels and/or wind turbines providing the necessary electrical
power. Heating will be provided through passive solar strategies, with the mass on the inside of the building absorbing the heat from the sun in the winter. Currently under consideration for the heat storage mass are large water columns, functioning as Trombe Walls located just inside the south walls of the building. In the summer, clerestory windows will draw cooler air through the building from the north side, while seasonal vegetation will shade the south side. Design Guidelines The Design Guidelines for the Gathering Hall and future structures within the Community will help establish a coherent architectural language and palette of materials. CATALYST'S initial sketch studies have drawn upon the agri-industrial buildings native to the rural landscape characteristic of the site. Natural earth plasters, durable metal details, and low-pitched standing seam metal roofs (suitable for water harvesting), would help convey the rugged, low-maintenance look appropriate for the community's context and location.
