Project Aware Phase II Begins Construction
PRESCOTT, AZ- The long
awaited second phase of the Project Aware Men’s Shelter is finally
under construction! After much grant writing (thank you Melody Reifsnyder), many weekly meetings with the Board of Directors (thank you Alfred Falk and crew), numerous false starts with a modular concept and a final construction contract with Kalista Homes (thank you Paul Lutz), we finally have hammers flying on the site (actually, hammers don’t fly anymore, but, it sounds better than pneumatic air guns flying). Governor's Dedication The first phase of the Project Aware Men’s Shelter contained four, one bedroom apartments. Intended for men who are getting their lives back on track, it was quickly filled after being dedicated by Governor Janet Napalitano in 2006. Design work for the second phase was already under way at that point, but it has taken until the end of 2008 to jump through all the hoops. The new building will house an additional ten men in individual studio apartments. Each unit will contain its own kitchenette and bathroom, with all of the units opening out onto a common courtyard. Solar Power With
work underway on the second phase of Project Aware, Melody has already
begun submitting grant applications for the third and final phase of
Project Aware, which will be a renovation of the existing building into
six more units as well as a small day room for men to congregate in, do
laundry and socialize. Meanwhile, Melody is also investigating
funding sources to have solar phovoltaic panels placed on the roofs of
the second and third phase buildings. If all goes as planned, the
project should be completed by the end of 2010, housing 20 men and
helping them to become reintegrated into society. Congratulations, Project Aware! CATALYST ARCHITECTURE is an award winning, full-service sustainable design firm located in Prescott, Arizona.
